The charity auction held at Cafe Ambio, Junction 36 Rural Auction Centre on 27th January was a great success. The event raised over 2700 pounds, thank you to everyone who donated items for the auction, raffle prizes etc. The star item was a 1928 flock book which raised 810 pounds. Thanks to John Bennet of Long Sleddale who donated the book to be auctioned. The charity supported this year was the Pride of Cumbria Air Ambulance. Thanks also to Ian Grizedale who supplied the hoggs for the stock judging. The annual in-lamb sheep sale at J36 Rural Auction Centre had the largest entry to date with a busy ring of buyers and spectators throughout the day which saw a brilliant atmosphere throughout with a strong trade to match. North West Auctions was proud to host the annual Rough Diamonds show and sale of individual Rough Fell females. The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Mr Ian Mallinson of Selside with the sale kindly sponsored by Alligator Mobile Sheep Handling. A strong line up of sheep was present which saw the championship rosette awarded to Sarah Hoggarth of Birkhaw Farm, lot 64 a two-crop ewe. The ewe was sired by RF2252, Poppy Unmistakeable, and she was scanned in-lamb with twins to RF2748 Cautgill Yelp, she later sold to 350gns to Stephen and Wendy Dickinson of Tebay. The reserve champion was awarded to TLB & J Knowles of Borrowbridge with lot 58 a Gimmer Shearling scanned in-lamb with twins to RF3030 Flakebridge Ziggy. The gimmer shearling, sired by RF2312 Brownber Unimog, sold to 400gns joining the growing flock of Paula Allen of St Annes Farm. The sale also included the flock dispersal of Rough Fell breeding sheep on behalf of NC & S Dodd of Kirkby Stephen which saw Rough Fell gimmer shearlings selling to £145 and aged Rough Fell ewes, in-lamb to the Leicester, selling to £79. The annual show and sale of registered Kendal Rough Fell Rams on behalf of the Rough Fell Sheep Breeders Association took place on Saturday 15th October at J36 Rural Auction Centre. There was a catalogued entry of 211 Rams for the sale. The pre-sale show was, once again, well supported with a good turnout in each class. Our thanks goes to the judges for giving up their time and expertise. A special thank goes to our sponsor H Pigney & Son for their continued and thanks goes to Andrew Woof for his presence at the sale. The championship rosette was awarded to Lot 155 High Cark Ziggy, a shearling Ram, from I & JM Mallinson, Borrow Bridge, Shap with the reserve champion also going to a shearling, lot 66, Zazu from D Stephenson, Gables, Ravenstonedale. A large entry of Rams forward for the sale sold a selective trade this year, with breeders looking for powerful stylish Rams. Aged Rams sold to a mixed trade topping at 700gns from JE Harding, Winllan, Penisarwaen for lot 6 Lockbank W3. The first prized aged Ram sold to 450gns from J Hunter, Galloper Park Tebay. A difficult Ram Lamb trade was endured topping at 300gns from J Hunter, Galloper Park, Tebay with Rams Lambs averaging £151. The day’s shearling Ram trade topped at 6000gns for the Champion lot 155 High Cark Ziggy, a shearling Ram, from I & JM Mallinson, Borrow Bridge, Shap coming from the same home and last year’s record breaking price Ram. This Ram sold in a three way split to A & H Watson, Middleton Hall, H Chapman & Son, Millbeck and A Troughton, Moors Farm. Other notable prices in the Shearling section were 4500gns for lot 146 ZZ Topper from E & K Bland, Cotegill, Gaisgill selling to MP & A Capstick, High Lane. Also achieving 4000gns MJ Handley, Catholes, Sedbergh with lot 128 Zero selling to I & JM Mallinson, with all shearling Rams forward selling to an average of £501. They have no official tags, but 3 have a green tag and 2 have a pink tag. They have a green spot on their tail head. WITH OVER £1000 RAISED FOR CHARITY BY THE ROUGH FELL SHEEP BREEDERS ASSOCIATION The annual show and sale of Rough Fell in-lamb sheep attracted a large crowd of buyers from throughout the UK, from as far afield as Wales, Ireland and the Midlands. Judging was in the capable hands of young breeder Aaron Troughton from Firbank, who awarded the championship rosette to a Shearling from William Dawson, Sedbergh, which was scanned carrying twins. The judge later backed his decision and purchased the sheep for a final bid of 500gns. The reserve champion, a Shearling for S Hoggarth & R Capstick, Howgill, scanned carrying twins also achieved a final bid of 500gns selling to Miss Amy Harrison, Kentmere. The sale topped at 600gns for the first prize In-lamb Ewe from E & K Bland, Tebay. This 1 crop Ewe was scanned with twins, and sold to K Milburn, Sedbergh. 10 In-lamb Rough Fell sheep sold in excess of 200gns. The flock reduction on behalf of George & Kath Robinson saw a top price of 240gns, achieved for In-lamb Shearlings, and older Ewes selling to 220gns. Several consignments of groups of In-lamb sheep sold to keen interest, with 3 Ewes from G & K Robinson selling for 150gns, with others 125gns from A Mackie, Howgill, selling a pen of 5 In-lamb Ewes. Just one entry of grouped Shearlings sold to 105gns all carrying singles from T,L,B & J Knowles. During the sale of sheep on Saturday, an In-lamb Ewe was kindly donated by Mr John Capstick, Mary Fell, Sedbergh, with the sale proceed of 250gns being donated to Cancer Research UK. The prize show saw a superb line up of Rams in all six classes with a Shearling ‘Brownber Yobbo’ from MP & A Capstick, High Lane awarded the overall championship rosette with the reserve place given to the first prize aged Ram from SW Huck, Dale View.
